This week the Folkestone Academy have welcomed me into the school to present assemblies to students about the dangers of possessing and sharing indecent images. We discussed: ✅ What sextortion is ✅ How to stay safe online ✅ The legal and emotional consequences when indecent images are shared Please have a conversation with any young people you care for about keeping safe online with regards to indecent images and exploitation. Key Talking Points for Conversations · What Sextortion Is Explain that sextortion happens when someone threatens to share intimate images unless the victim gives money, more images, or other favours. It’s a form of exploitation and a crime. · Legal Consequences Possessing or sharing indecent images of anyone under 18—even if self-generated—is illegal. It can lead to police involvement and long-term consequences. · Emotional Impact Once an image is shared, control is lost. This can lead to anxiety, shame, and bullying. Emphasise that asking for help early is always the best option. · How to Stay Safe Online - Never share intimate images, even with people you trust.
- Be cautious about who you talk to online—many offenders pretend to be peers.
- Use privacy settings and report suspicious behaviour.
· What to Do If Something Happens - Don’t panic—help is available.
- Tell a trusted adult immediately.
- Report to the platform and the police. In the UK, CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection) is a key resource
